Tai Chi and Qigong

 

Qi is a vital health giving energy that is all around us and flows through us along a system of pathways known as meridians. Tai Chi and Qigong promote this flow of energy by unblocking and stimulating various acupoints throughout our bodies.

Tai Chi is both a mind and body exercise rooted in multiple traditions, including the martial arts, traditional Chinese medicine and also philosophy. Originally developed in 13th-century China, Tai Chi is today practised throughout the world as a health-promoting exercise. It is low-impact which means it doesn’t put excess pressure on your bones and joints. Tai Chi training integrates slow, gentle movements with breathing and cognitive skills. It harmonises the body and mind, promoting the natural flow of energy and improves health and personal development. Tai Chi poses flow smoothly from one into another throughout the form. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory health. The slow rhythmic movements of Tai Chi reduce stress, build stamina and increase vitality. It also enhances the immune system and the circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions.

Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. Qigong creates an awareness of, and influences, dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programmes. It brings together and emphasises the importance of being mindful and timing your breathing with physical movements. When these dimensions are added, the benefits of exercise increases exponentially.
